GH2 India & Odisha: Taking the Hydrogen Conversation Closer to Action

Odisha Green hydrogen

From the Editorial Desk IGHA – Hyvolution India 2026 – 18 August, 2026 | Why Odisha is worth watching

There is a reason Odisha keeps coming up in conversations around India’s green hydrogen future.

It already has much of what a hydrogen economy eventually needs around it — a strong steel and metals industry, ports, industrial demand and, importantly, the possibility of connecting domestic consumption with future exports.

That is why the recent meeting between GH2 India and the Government of Odisha caught our attention.

The GH2 India delegation, led by Bhupinder S. Bhalla and Erik Solheim, met Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy), and Dr. Satyapriya Rath, IAS, MD, GRIDCO Limited, along with companies developing projects around Gopalpur and Paradip.

What I find encouraging here is the nature of the conversation itself.

We have reached a stage where India doesn’t need green hydrogen to remain a discussion around targets and announcements. We need projects on the ground. We need buyers. We need infrastructure. And we need states, industry and investors sitting across the same table working through what it will actually take to get there.

Odisha has a genuine opportunity to become one of those places where the pieces come together.

Its industrial base can create demand. Its coastline and ports can support movement of hydrogen derivatives such as green ammonia. And the investments already being discussed in the state suggest that industry sees the opportunity too.

This is also why conversations such as these matter to IGHA – Hyvolution India 2026. When the hydrogen ecosystem meets in November, the most useful discussions will not simply be about what India can do. They need to be about what is already moving, what is holding projects back, and how we get the next set of projects built.

Good to see GH2 India taking that conversation directly to the states where much of India’s hydrogen story may eventually be written.

FAQs

1. Why is Odisha emerging as an important green hydrogen destination?
Odisha has an unusual combination of heavy industry, ports, industrial clusters and potential demand for cleaner fuels and feedstocks. That gives it the opportunity to develop not simply hydrogen projects, but a wider hydrogen ecosystem.

2. What role is GH2 India playing in Odisha’s green hydrogen conversation?
GH2 India is engaging with policymakers, industry and project developers around the development of India’s green hydrogen ecosystem. Its recent interaction with the Government of Odisha brought the state’s hydrogen and green ammonia opportunity into sharper focus.

3. Why was GH2 India’s meeting with the Government of Odisha significant?
The discussion brought government representatives and companies developing projects around Gopalpur and Paradip together. Such conversations matter because hydrogen projects require coordination across policy, infrastructure, energy, industry and investment.

4. Why are Gopalpur and Paradip important for green hydrogen and green ammonia?
Their coastal locations and connection with industrial and port infrastructure make them relevant to the development, movement and potentially future export of green hydrogen derivatives such as green ammonia.

5. What industries in Odisha could benefit from green hydrogen?
Energy-intensive industries are particularly relevant. Odisha’s substantial metals and industrial base creates an interesting opportunity for green hydrogen to become part of longer-term industrial decarbonisation.

6. Why is green ammonia important to Odisha?
Green ammonia can serve both as an industrial feedstock and as a hydrogen derivative that is comparatively easier to store and transport. Odisha’s coastal infrastructure makes this especially interesting from both domestic and future international-market perspectives.

7. Can Odisha become a green hydrogen and green ammonia hub?
The ingredients are certainly interesting: industrial demand, ports, project activity and government engagement. The real test will be whether these advantages translate into commercially viable projects, infrastructure and long-term demand.

8. What will Odisha need to scale its hydrogen ecosystem?
Reliable renewable power, competitive production, storage and transportation infrastructure, financing, industrial offtake, certification and close coordination between government and industry will all matter.

9. How does GH2 India’s Odisha engagement fit into India’s larger hydrogen ambition?
India’s national ambition ultimately has to translate into projects at the state and industrial-cluster level. Engagements such as this can help connect national hydrogen objectives with the regions where projects, infrastructure and demand will actually develop.

10. How does this connect with IGHA – Hyvolution India 2026?
The Odisha discussion is a good example of the conversations that India’s hydrogen sector now needs—moving beyond ambition towards investment, infrastructure, industrial demand and execution. These themes will come together at IGHA – Hyvolution India 2026, where policymakers, industry leaders, project developers, technology providers and investors can take such conversations further.
